Looks to me as though you're trying to use them like acrylics instead of like watercolor. Go look at Jason Shawn Alexander, John J. Muth or Kent Williams... they do awesome stuff with watercolor. Study how the masters do it... try to see if you can tell how they're doing it just by looking at it. I've found that helps me a lot. And mainly, just keep at it.
